Which candidates, and why
INEC displayed 19 presidential candidates on its preliminary list (1 August 2026); its final list of 12 September has 18. We follow six of them: the incumbent, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the five challengers whose campaigns have had the most sustained national coverage in the outlets we monitor: Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, Seyi Makinde, Omoyele Sowore and Adewole Adebayo. This is an editorial choice. The full list is on INEC’s website.

How we source
- Quotes are verbatim as published in the linked report and are never translated. Summaries are ours.
- Every entry links to its source, and we open each link before publishing it. Where a source has a link to a candidate, we say so: Sahara Reporters was founded by Omoyele Sowore, and we add independent sources for his entries where we can.
- Speeches delivered on a candidate’s behalf, or statements issued by aides, are labelled as such.
- Promises come only from recorded statements. “Promised” marks a commitment; “Proposed” marks a policy idea or target. Criticism is summarised as “said”.
- Polls are shown with their method and sample, and are not forecasts.
- Quote of the week rotates through the six candidates in turn, one per week, showing that candidate’s most recent confirmed quote, or another recent quote from that candidate chosen by the editors. No candidate gets the top spot more often than another.
What the labels mean
- Stated
- The source gives the date and facts directly.
- Inferred
- The date is worked out from the source, such as “on Tuesday”.
- Reported
- The source gives no exact day, or relies on a third party; the report’s date is used.
- Scheduled
- Planned but not yet happened.
- Disputed
- Sources disagree, or the entry has an open check.
Corrections
If you spot an error, email corrections@follow2027.ng with the entry’s date and a link to your source. We aim to reply within two working days. Corrections are made in the entry itself and noted in a public log with the date of the change. We do not remove entries because a candidate dislikes them, only when they are wrong.
